Parliamentary Proceedings.
Legislative Council.
Monday—July, 29th
.. Hon. Mr. [Joseph] Bourret [Canada East] reported from the Committee on the Bill to incorporate the Ottawa Grand Junction Railway Company, recommending several amendments. The amendments were adopted, and the Bill ordered to be read a third time tomorrow. The House then took into consideration the report on the Huron and Toronto Railroad Company Bill.
Hon. Mr. [Peter Boyle] de Blaquière [Canada West] said he believed the hon. Chairman (Mr. B.) was under the impression that the order for advertising in the Canada Gazette was not complied with. He held in his hand a copy of the Gazette in which the advertisement was inserted. As he supposed that was the only objection to the Bill, he hoped that the hon. Chairman would drop the report, as it was plain he was under a misapprehension.
Hon. Mr. [John] Ross [Canada West] replied that, even if the report were incorrect, he would oppose the Bill on its merits, and move the second reading that day six months, but he adopted the other mode as it was easier and would not be attended with so great a loss of time. The Bill was advertised in the Canada Gazette, it was true, but he insisted that the report was substantially correct, as the parties who brought the Bill before the Legislature had not advertised it for six months previous to the meeting of Parliament. He should therefore persist in moving for the adoption of the report.
The Report, recommending that no further proceedings should be had on the Bill was then concurred in.
