Fear Railway Track Near King May Be Undermined by Flood
King, May 23—C.N.R. section men are guarding a stretch of main line track north of the station here, where a blocked culvert has backed up the waters of a creek to form a pond 12 feet deep in spots. All trains are forced to slow down to a crawl as they pass over 200 yards of track which officials say may be undermined by the flood.
Biggest threat at the moment comes from the lowly groundhog and similar small animals with a yen for burrowing through the earth. If one gets through the railway embankment it will be followed by the water, which will tear a hole in no time and bring the ballast down with a bang, officials fear.
Light sleepers in the village are having a troubled time this week as main line trains groan and snort and puff while trying to pick up speed after coming to a stop on the grade. A call has gone out for special equipment to clear the culvert.
