Canadian Rail Roads.
Within the last week the inhabitants of this city have recorded their votes in opposition to the proposed rail road to lake Huron. We are surprised that they should be called upon to tax themselves to the extent of £100,000 to build a road neither the exact route or expenses of which have yet been decided upon.
How much better would it be for the people of Toronto to unite with the Directors of the Great Western Rail Road, and aid in commencing the grand provincial Trunk line, that must one day be built in Canada! This would be a feasible project; we would know its costs; the winter's ice in the Upper Lakes, instead of hindering the traffic and travel on such road, would increase it. And as soon as the entire line to Montréal and Portland were completed, the business on this road would pay both in summer and winter. It will be seen from the following table of the votes recorded, that upwards of 3 to 1 are opposed to the lottery and undetermined road:
For. Against. St. George's Ward 70 49 St. Andrews's do. 31 88 St. David's do. 11 135 St. Lawrence do. 15 96 St. James's do. 38 158 St. Patrick's do. 31 144 196 668

The Annual Meeting of this Company for the election of Directors, was held on Monday last. The Spectator says the meeting was very large, and that only those holding Canadian Stock voted. The following are the names of the Directors elected:—
R. W. Harris, Archibald Kerr, Peter Carroll, Richard Jason, W. P. McLaren, Robert McIlroy, Daneil McNab, H. McKinstry, Sir Allan McNab, Jas. Hamilton, G. S. Tiffany, Esquires The greater part of these are undoubtedly the best names that could be selected; but we are satisified that the past known conduct of at least one of them—in the affairs of that road—will of itself hinder its progress. We allude of course to the member for that city.
