Car hits train, nurse, 30, dies in wreckage
Coldwater, Jan. 9.—a 30-year old public health nurse died in the wreckage of her car this morning after it collided with a CPR freight train at a level crossing one half mile west of here.
The victim was Elsie M. Uens, of Bracebridge and Toronto, nurse for the Muskoka health unit. She was driving alone in her car and had apparently attempted to stop but skidded into the engine of the freight. The car was thrown 30 feet into a ditch by the impact.
Engineer Del Griffin of the Orillia-bound freight reported that he applied his brakes but was unable to avoid the collision.
Police who investigated the accident said visibility at the crossing is good and road conditions excellent for winter.
Mrs. George Marshall who lives near the crossing put in an emergency call for a doctor but by the time one reached the scene, the victim, still pinned in the wreckage was dead.
Miss Uens was residing on Aubrey St., Bracebridge. Her home address was 95 Willcocks St., Toronto.
